A large banner is hung on the side of the reception desk, indicating that there would be no call for the flight. Two ladies welcome you at the counter and tell you that TAAG is the 3-star airline and that they share a lounge.
Our stopover in Luanda was scheduled for 4: 45 p.m., but we left Sao Paulo at 11: 15 p.m. and arrived in Lisbon at 6: 30 p.m. As we boarded an hour early for Lisbon, we thought we might as well go to the posted time, hoping that I might be the first to take a photo.
I asked the saleswoman how much it would be in USD and she confirmed the official exchange rate. My friend replied in Portuguese and explained that it was written on the airline, and he seemed satisfied with the answer.
Getting a tourist visa to Angola has historically been almost impossible, though that is about to change. Luanda airport has no jetty, so we drove through the terminal and were curious if we could talk ourselves out of the country. The immigration checkpoint was straight ahead, while the passengers of the international transit could follow the signs to the left.
There was an entrance to the TAAG Angola Lounge, but there was no queue, so we got in. There was a bar area at the back of the entrance, which was not occupied and we did not have to have anything, as the food and drinks were served themselves. It seemed like about half the people in the lounge were locals, although we had the impression that the other half or so were oil workers of some kind.
Gate four was perhaps the only gate at the airport, which may not seem ideal when you have two 777 that fly 40 minutes apart but seem to be used by all flights. There was a flight to Havana (na), which was in the final stages of boarding, and we were just starting to board the flight from Lisbon, which turned into a huge mess, as only passengers on one flight were supposed to be in a sterile zone at one time.
The Palm is a pop art exhibition that beautifies the walls of the hotel, and Luanda 24 is located on the second floor of a luxury hotel in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Emirati culture has inspired the rooms with bespoke artwork and luxurious amenities, ideal places to relax, unwind and entertain.
The TAAG lounge is nowhere near the best airport lounges in the world, but I don't see myself pushing back. This property breaks the mold with an unscripted check-in / check out experience, and I appreciate the decoration that invites me to travel.
